Lockheed Electra 10a 2015

photos@old81studios.com (OLD 81 STUDIOS) — Fri, 09 Oct 2026 00:00:00 GMT

]]>Just a brief note and some videos from the kid's and I's field trip/photo shoot/historic restoration project photo/video journalism type of adventure.

I thank my many friends (old and new) for allowing us to watch and record these amazing events and milestones for the world to view for many years to come.

I'm talking about the Wichita Air Services (almost complete) restoration of a 1937 Lockheed Electra 10a. This a such a beautiful airplane. Read more about it below.

Lockheed 10A Electra, Serial Number 1091, Built in 1937. Powered by two Pratt & Whitney 985 Wasp Juniors; 450hp each. It was one of the first all metal commercial transports that had the range that allowed it to hop continents to make it to any destination in the world. Designed to carry two pilots and ten passengers/crew.

This is the same aircraft type flown by Amelia Earhart on her ill fated round-the-world trip and the story goes that this plane was slotted for the Amelia Earhart group before they were asked to take the next plane from the assembly line.

The plane that succeeded this one had some troubles and didn't make the delivery to Chicago in 1937 for the upcoming and planned campaign therefore her (original) plane was sold to the Bata Shoe Company in Zlin, Czechoslovakia. It was then flown around the world as a promotional stunt for the shoe company.

Except from the Bata Shoe Company's page here on Facebook:

From a one-man cobblers' operation in 1894, the Bata Shoe Company has grown to become one of the world's leading shoe manufacturing and retailing companies, with a retail network spanning across 70 countries.

At the forefront of innovation since its inception, not only in the production and design of new styles, but in the creation of business models that permit a quick response to rapidly changing markets.

Today, after almost 120 years, Bata has remained true to its core principle: to know its customers and to create the best possible products to meet their needs.
